How Ketamine Works

Scientists have been studying ketamine for many decades. Starting in the 1990s, we discovered how powerful ketamine could be for alleviating even the most severe depressive symptoms and creating meaningful change.

Ketamine may work through three core biological mechanisms

  1. Ketamine disrupts the activation of a network in the brain that causes us to think in repetitive and negative thought loops. When we turn down the volume on this network, those critical self-focused thoughts can quiet.

  2. Ketamine may regulate the neurotransmitters and proteins in the brain that are responsible for learning, memory, concentration, and emotion processing.

  3. Ketamine facilitates neuroplasticity, which is our brain’s ability to learn new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding.

How Odessa Works with Ketamine

We layer ketamine treatment with talk therapy in a method called Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).

Ketamine can make psychotherapy incredibly powerful because it:

Increases our receptivity to thinking about things in new ways
Softens our defense mechanisms and allows us to access blocked feelings
Provides a transformative experience of self
Helps us make meaning of our experiences

With KAP, we can often create movement in places where individuals have felt stuck in traditional therapy.

KAP has been shown to help prolong and maximize the benefits of ketamine for patients.

Who It Can Help

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy can be an excellent option for treatment for those who have tried other therapies or medications and felt that they only scratched the surface.

It can help individuals who:

Struggle with persistent feelings of overwhelm, irritability, or hopelessness
Find themselves caught in dysfunctional patterns that stem from problems in self-worth and never-enoughness
Experience chronic stress and burnout
Are struggling to move out of repetitive and painful dynamics in their romantic and other relationships

Is it safe?

Ketamine was first approved by the FDA in 1970 as an anesthetic and analgesic, and has been listed on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines since 1985. It’s used widely around the globe in patients of all ages and with a vast array of medical conditions. It is considered extremely safe when used appropriately.

Ketamine has also been prescribed off-label since the 1990s to treat a wide range of mental health issues. At Odessa, we partner with Journey Clinical as our medical team. Your Journey Clinical prescriber will evaluate your specific medical status to ensure that ketamine is a safe and appropriate treatment for you.
